When you live in a world that was designed for you, things come easier. An abled person may seldom reflect on their mobility and realize the privilege it has afforded them in a world that views their bodies as superior.
This May, during Mobility Awareness Month, we encourage you to stop and reflect on your own mobility - how it has afforded you every opportunity in your life so far, how it affects everything you do from when you get up to the moment you go to bed - and every second in between.
From May 2nd to May 8th we're moving 5,000 miles in 7 days to raise $30,000 and open a new program in Vietnam and reach more CoolKids in need because a more equitable and inclusive tomorrow starts with ensuring every child receives the high-quality mobility treatment they need to gain independence, access to education, navigate the world, and explore with their friends and family.
We're moving because mobility is self-sufficiency - the ability to get dressed, use the bathroom, and care for oneself - but a child with an untreated limb disability is unable to care for themselves, and an estimated 95% of people living with a disability in the developing world cannot afford care.
We're moving because mobility is access to education - the ability to walk, roll, or bike to school - but a child living with an untreated limb disability is less likely to receive an education, and an estimated 90% of children with disabilities in the developing world do not attend school.
When you sign up to Move For ALTSO, every dollar you raise and mile you move will help provide life-changing prosthetic limbs, orthotic devices, and appropriately fitted wheelchairs for children in the developing world, giving them access to education, independence, and the ability to simply be a kid.
